Needs a good home: Stella is 8 months old, spayed, has the worlds LOUDEST purr, Is Best Buddies with an 70 pound American Bulldog, and is frequently caught licking him, rubbing against him, sleeping near him. There is an adoption fee (we paid for the spay) but honestly, its negotiable! We can't afford 4 cats!!!

Oh I am a BAD BAD Dog Trainer...

To my defense the Westcott Dog Project got seriously sidetracked when I was knocked down by my own big dog and cracked my ankle, then had to have back surgery.

So apologize. To the people who have been e-mailing and asking about dog pictures YES they are going to be up I swear!!!

Starting with two that are close to home.

First because well he is my darling:

With his mom (me) of course. One of the reasons we still hustle around the Syracuse area wrangling strays and trying to get them back to their homes and telling people about low cost spaying and neutering.

Next up:

DD! aka Dirty Dog.

Resident Shop Dog at Cerios. Sweetheart by day, I do not envy the fool who would try to break into this place. . .Surrounded by people who spoil her rotten all day long and then gets to bark herself silly at every noise and not be told to quiet down, and the vacation and dental plan is great too.

Great job if you can get it!

That's all for now. I have two more but once again I am at a loss as to which computer, or hard drive, or external hard drive, or thumb drive, or G locker I have them in...

Chicken in the city

Today while walking your trusty investigator found a house that has been not only had checkens living in their backyard with no chicken coop. Further they routinely slaughter the Roosters when they become of age (ie when they get noisy and the neighbors complain)

You may wonder how I know this. Well the couples wonderfu children, and neighbors told me all of this after I hear clucking coming from the back of their house and was honestly flummoxed.

A few points. It is COMPLETELY illegal to have chickens in the city of syracuse as domestic farm animals in a residential setting.

It is also completely unhealthy, illegal, and cruelty to animals to slaughter them yourself in a backyard with no proper equipment, and completely unsanitary.

Tomorrow I will be calling Codes, the ASPCA, FARM Sanctuary, and the News to get these chickens out of this bad situation.

I was just going to walk to the store and back. that was all!

Foster cat 3.0 Thomas

Thomas was tested again.

I left him out in my office with a pile of cushions and a pile of laundry as well as my office chair and out of his dog pen.

He was out for 6 hours unattended with full access to cat box.

He didn't have an accident or eliminate outside his box.

I even had the dog come in last night and visit him while he was in my lap for 2 minutes, he hissed and was wary but no inappropriate eliminations.

some things I consider.

1. I have a rather relaxed and somewhat quiet household.

2. We don't yell at the cats when they are bad, we just correct the behavior or tsk or hiss.

3. They have plenty of toys and other stimulation including a fish tank and bird feeder outside each window.

4. We try to give all out cats independent one on one time (One cat even get my shower time as his one on one time!)

5. We don't use air fresheners, commercial chemicals, or a lot of strongly scented things.

These may all be a factor in why he is suddenly more comfortable here.

Kitten Update 2.0

So medically he is fine.

But his owner calls us screaming he is urinating outside his box and she can't stand it and wants to return him.

We take him back and have him under supervision.

I immediately rule out Urinary tract crystals with urinalysis.

His diet is switched to Urinary tract health.

Litter box is changed daily,

Toys are plentiful and all specifically made to be stimulating without being dangerous.

He is located in a quiet, roomy but secluded XL Dog kennel with plenty of play space but areas to hole up.

So we sit back and wait.

He goes three days, no inappropriate urination.

So I let him out into my office.

And we wait.

Again, no inappropriate urination.

So I test him again by lettin other cats come in when he is in his cage.

He starts batting at them trying to play and sniffs interestedly under the door, but no inappropriate urination.

I do some research and even call the parents to let them know what our verdict is and ask if they would like to give him another chance.

They do not.

He is a sweet, funny, loving kitty with leopard spots who loves to cuddle, give kisses and play until he drops.

I think he would be good with a one cat house and a person who was a homebody. I don't think he'd be a good apartment cat not because he pees but because he cries when you leave because he is such a people cat.

He is great with kids and LOVES everyone he meets.

He has met our huge Bull dog and shows no fear. I think he would be OK with a large gentle cat friendly dog.

But if you have a lot of antiques or have never had an explorer kitten, he may drive you a little insane because he is a weasel that explores EVERYTHING!

Speaking of which, I need to get him out of my books now.

Tigris, Petland, VegFest Oh MY!

Long Time no shout Out.

Sorry your fearless leader was incapacitated with litter after litter of abandoned kittens in her office.

I have been kitten free for a month and a half! HURRAH!

Petland Demo went awesome, my nephews 1ST! He wants to protest the circus next, his mother said she was willing to let him go, awesome.

Tigris Circus is going to be in town next weekend April 3,4, and 5. From 5:45 to 7 I believe that the shows are the same times Saturday and Sunday as well. If you can come to ANY of these protests I am coming with the elephant checklist, camcorder, digital camera, emergency cells, and nubers for ACLU. We will have 2 minors with us as long as no one trespasses on private circus property and is friendly we will have NO PROBLEMS.

Monty is lead on security again and I knit him a hat last year and sent him a christmas card to he and his wife, we are in like peas and corn people.

Vegfest. Last year we made the previous management vanish into dust and it was our TRIAL RUN people. THis year its not the same day as Juice jam, we will have MORE College kids, MORE youth, MORE professors and their Children and MORE people who want college kids to see their vegan and vegetarian wares.

Vegfest Syracuse is going to be the number one go to event in Syracuse this September, but we need you to make it happen!

Allie needs a new home

Allie has become the KO ofice cat, but its not fair to her. She deserves a house where she can interact with other cats, sleep with her human, and receive love.

Allie is Black and white, short haired, spayed and SUPERBLY sweet.

SHe loves nothing more than to lie on your lap while you play on the computer.

She is potty trained and lets us trim her nails and uses a scratching post.

She would be an IDEAL house cat.

Won't you give this former mother of 5 a home???

The Gentle Leader and the Halti Leader

As Many of you know, Kind Outreach Headquarters was recently the dump site for a 70 pound, un-neutered, Pit bull/Dalmatian mix.

After having his fostered here for over a month and several inquiries but no successful adoptions we decided that Kane was meant to stay.

However, Kane was a BEAST on a leash. We tried regular collars, gentle leader, Halti leaders, choke collars, prong collars and harnesses.

FINALLY we managed to come to a consensus. Kane would walk with Crash (Papa) with a harness, and with KJ (Mama) with a harness/ Halti combo.

At first (and sometimes still when we are walking) Kane would try to yank the head gear off. After several days inside wearing it he FINALLY realized that if he was going to go to the bathroom he was going to wear the head collar.

We were actually sent by my mother a gentle leader AND a Halti (spoiled grandDog!) and Kane is MUCH more behaved with the Halti and it is harder for him to get off than the Gentle leader.

However as a training method if you have large dogs that pull and lunge I would recommend using a harness with a looped leash and a small cat/light leash on the GL/Halti.

That way you have a backup handle for if your dog is like mine and lunges towards other dogs to play.

I looked up methods and descriptions of both and recommend going in for a fitting when buying either.

Syracuse Vegfest September 7th!

Kind Outreach is in charge this year of Kids activities, and The first of now annual Adopt-a-thons!

It will be held in SYracuse NY in Thornden Park near the Ampitheater. Doors open at 10 and close at 5PM.

We ourselves have 3 kittens that will up for adoption so we are posing them and adjusting for cuteness for the Adopt-a-thon. Also we will be making Origami cats and dogs. There will be work sheets on over population of animals for kids. Coloring books on Elephants and stickers!

We will be giving away free giovanni Hair Care Samples, and raffling off n awesome Kiss my face gift basket as well!

Mama and Bebe's finally in from the cold

With a little help from my nephew we finally trapped mama cat.

Using some hard cardboard to elongate the trap lever so it would trigger sooner (because she was such a tiny thing)

Here she is some what peeved at us for thwarting her:

All in all it was an easy trap and rescue Cats seems in good condition and didn't seem to have terrible fleas, no upper respiratory (which amazes because of the cold and wet!) of course on a personal level the tiny kitten purrs and cuddles were perks. The tiny little nubby e-wars and widdle p-was and wet noseys, and cute little blue eyes! . . . ahem, they are cute, I digress.

Citizen Kane

So Chris and I are sitting on our front porch when a silver SUV pulls up and out pops a young man and a white dog and then the young man jumps back into the SUV and says "DRIVE DRIVE DRIVE!" and goes away leaving the dog in our front yard.

Here begins the story of Kane.

A well mannered Shar-Pei, Pit-Bull, Mastiff Mutt who loves kids, seems to ignore cats and knows basic obedience, is crate trained and knows how to be a good watch dog.

This is a picture of his collar.

He will be neutered and ready for adoption soon.

Still. Kane came to us with abrasions on his face, wirey muscle tone and defensive wounds. It appears he was taken because someone thought he might make a good fighting dog, or good breeding stock and ended up with a good pet until they got sick of him.

Now Kane needs to be retired to a good home. We are unsure how he is with other dogs as of now. As soon as he is neutered he will be up for adoption.

We have a busy week and weekend kiddies. We will be in Auburn For Carson and Barnes Circus trying to see if we can convince some people not to go to the circus.

We will be in Rochester Trying to get Ringling Bros to feel very unwelcome. They don't enjoy our company and the feeling is of course mutual.

We have seen the Syracuse New Times had some EXCELLENT articles on Circuses and their mistreatment of elephants. Thanks to Munroe for the excellent article and keep it coming.

This Friday, Saturday and Sunday we will be at Taste of Syracuse Leafleting and attempting to spread the word for Spay and Neuter Syracuse as well as Vera House Information and Kind Outreach's new Obedience Program, Abuse Human and animal making connections, as well as connections to different rescue agencies if people want info on where to adopt animals or where to drop off food or other supplies.

We will also be at PRIDE parade on Saturday! We are going to have a table decked out in rainbows and be handing out candy as well as information about our obedience program, spaying and neutering, vegetarian diet, and info as mentioned above.

If you are interested in helping out at any of the above events please call or e-mail me and I will probably not answer but will get back to you (If I am home I am with my cats and the fiance or trying to clean or rest, or write!)

So my guilty little secret is out. I find this website hilarious. So when I stumbled upon a video of a dog biting a staff person I immediately pulled on my Scrappy Behavioral Trainer Cape and fired off an e-mail offering some insight into her aggression problems and some insight.

I thought I would receive one of the following.

2. An email.

I got an e-mail asking if they could drive up to Syracuse and video tape me training their dog!

Sunday September 21st

Westcott comes alive for its annual Cultural Fair. This year Kind Outreach will be joining Westcott Community Center as well as several other community agencies on the streets offering information about low cost paying and neutering, vegan diets, factory farming, cruelty in entertainment and much much more.

We have just mailed in our check and secured our spot smack in the center between 7 Rays and Alto Cinco (WOOT!)

We will soon be pairing up with Vera House to start a Humane Education Manual to be distributed to local children's education agencies. Hopefully we will have them available by the time of the fair and will have them available for a small fee or donation depending on how donations come in.

This man paid two street kids to chase down a emancipated dog, so he could chain it to a tether in his gallery. Then people were instructed not to feed it or give it water so that they could watch it slowly die of dehydration and starvation in the name of "art"

So what does this illustrious community do to this waste of flesh? they invite him to be their artist of honor in their bicentennial art celebration.

This kind of behavior is not only inexcusable it is a sign of a personality that could easily harm a fellow human "in the name of art" Please support Kind Outreach in signing a petition that would ask Managua, Nicaragua to ban Guillermo from attending the bicentennial and would hold him accountable for the abuse he inflicted on a sentient creature.

We hope that Nicaragua by seeing the outrage pouring from other countries will see that this type of treatment of sentients beings is unacceptable and perhaps adopt some of the humane standards we take for granted here in the United states.

Yes alas, I have sold my soul and added an adsense account to the account in hopes of maybe bringing in a few pennies to this account.

I figure that if we visit on here once a week we might cover our copy sense. I am hoping to get some adoption updates on here, and start putting up more pictures of adoptees available so people have cute eye candy to oggle over.

An update for Kind Outreach is that we have homes 3 of the last 5 strays we have caught. almost 4-5 if we keep Jayne.

Which if Crash, Jayne, and two of the house kitties (myself included) have our says she stays. So unless a millionare couple comes forward lusting for a meduim hair black mouthy cat.... going once...

Four out of 5 adoptions have been successful.

As you may know kitten season is upon us and we are in need of lactating mothers, and foster homes. Kind Outreach has two large kitten cages that can be lent out for kittens if needed.

Donkey Basketball

Donkey Basketball

I got a frantic call from a Peta Kid at East Syracuse Minoa High School asking to view some footage we have of "donkey basketball" transportation horrors and abuse records.

When I called the school I spoke to a Assistant Principal that informed me that they were using one of the "best" donkey basketball organizations in the country and that they were certified by the USDA.

However, while this is better than a traveling trailer of malnourished scared animals, they are missing my point. Treating animals like they are no better than sports equipment and are laughed at, humiliated and made to do unnatural and uncomfortable things is like a sociopath's deviant behavior.

"Donkey basketball fund raisers send kids the message that it’s OK to abuse and humiliate those who are weaker than they are. Children who are exposed to animal abuse are taught the dangerous lesson that cruelty is acceptable. Dr. Mel Levine of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill wrote, “Certainly there is nothing more cruel that a child can do to another child than to embarrass him in front of peers. Equally devastating is the practice of exposing an animal to ridicule, laughter, and devaluation. Children should see adults treating animals with dignity and respect at all times.”

When I was speaking on the phone about this a co-worker (the same one who didn't graduate from high school and has to be prodded with being fired to actually do her job) said "Its just freakin donkey basketball! They come from a cozy farm, play a little basketball and then go eat their weight in hay"

If only that were true. Unfortunately this isn't the case. They are jammed into filthy trailers and driven all around the country and forced to allow people to ride them, kick them and pull them around even when sick, scared, or in pain.

Often the animals are improperly shod for walking on a hard gym floor and they suffer from knee, join, and hove problems and can go months without proper veterinary care.

The USDA has cited Donkey Basketball coordinators with violations to basic humane standards over and over again, and even themselves advocate finding other means of entertainment for students.

Its easy to assume that because there are people who do this sort of thing for a living that they would take care of the animals that provide them with income but the fact is that these animals are treated like chattel and given no more regard than tires. Once work to the tread they are cheaply disposed of and new tires are bought.

Are animals ours to treat inhumanely for our entertainment? Its up to you to become educated on both sides and make the choice.

In the end? We here at Kind Outreach believe that answer is no.

Valentines Day Protest-L'Adour

Our First Protest at L'adour restaurant went off like a hit!

We all dressed very business casual and were extremely polite, even helping patrons cross slippery walkways unshoveled by L'Adour.

We had only 2 people out of 30 people whom said negative or derogatory things to us while we held our peaceful protest. All other patrons said they would not eat Fois Gras, they had been uneducated as to what it actually entailed, and also wished to speak with a manager and suggest they take it off the menu.

Two news teams, and 2 local papers covered our stories and showed us peacefully holding our signs and handing out information.

In response to our written letters asking for meetings with the manager to show them footage of the facility in which L'Adour obtains its Fois Gras we received no interest in a neutral and peaceful meeting on their turf in which to discuss the possibility of taking it off the menu.

However, they felt the need to produce this letter when asked for a quote by the news camera man:

Here is a copy of the letter to the editor sent by myself on behalf of KOHEP:

Dear Editor,

I am one of the people whom has been protesting Fois Gras at the L'Adour restaurant in Syracuse NY.

I want to thank you for the article in the newspaper and for everyone whom wrote letters and made phone calls kindly asking L'Adour to take Fois Gras off its menu.

Despite assisting patrons over icy sidewalks and being completely silent in our peaceful demonstration we were defamed by the restaurant as being belligerent and harassing customers.

It appears saying "May I give you a flyer?" and "Happy Valentines Day" are belligerent and harassing behavior.

We have made several attempts to contact and meet with L'Adour to show them footage of the cruel Fois Gras Industry taken from the very factory that they themselves buy their Fois Gras from.

Each and every time they have refused. They say that Fois Gras is only 1% of their revenue and they would immediately take it off the menu if legislation was passed to make the manufacturing of the product illegal. Our question was if one is aware the inherent cruelty of a dish as well as knowing it only generates 1% of total revenue, why wouldn't one be able to take the dish of the menu?

In response to our flyers and peaceful demonstration more than half the patrons a L'Adour said they planned on not ordering the Fois Gras and in fact wished to speak with the management to ask them to take it off the menu.

Get ready Syracuse. We are getting ready to launch a HUGE protest Valentines day in front of "L'Adour"

Owned and operated by the Falcone family.

The Falcone family has refused meetings with SARO and other animal welfare agencies to discuss the cruel and archaic practice of Fois Gras Production.

So for this day of love, one of the busiest days for this restaurant, we are arranging a protest.

SAVE THE DATE: February 14th, 6-when we get cold.

After being made aware of the inherent cruelty to ducks in foie gras production, upscale French restaurant L’adour refuses to take the product off their menu or sign a foie gras free pledge.

L’adour is celebrating Valentine’s Day with “3 Night’s of Romance” from Feb. 14^th-16^th. Join SARO for 3 days of compassion- take action against the foie gras industry!

What: hold signs, yell chants and generally upset the mood for L’adour-while there is no justice for ducks- no peace for their patrons!

Important Note: due to the “upscale” nature of the crowd, the possibility of getting news channels to cover us, and in order to better advocate for the animals, please dress “business casual” or even “preppy”

Many feel this is a drop in the bucket. But it is said how we treat the smallest creature is how we will be seen by others.

Back from Florida Manatee Visit

While down helping a family member move I was able to see a resevior where manatee are protected from boats, propellers and the like.

I was fortunate enough to happen across a mother and baby manatee and got some pictures.

This little girl was found wandering around a parking lot. Luckily a man who has a dog adopted from Kind Outreach was there and knew to try to call us and give her KMR.

She is sick however and needs more one on one care.

Sweet Lab Rat Rescues need forever homes

There are 10 lab rats rescued from a college psychology experiment in Upstate NY.

Kind Outreach and SARO is pleased to announce open adoption for these lovable animals.

As a former rat owner myself (7 rats over 15 years) I highly reccomend them as intelligent, clean, sweet animals perfect to teach children about looks and myths about them.

Each and every rat I owned was smart and sweet enough to allow 5 year old children to play with them!

The puppy season

So it seems in low income areas there is a blossoming of puppies for sale.

90% of these puppies are from household who "couldn't afford" or "Neglected" to spay or neuter their animals.

Of these pets over 40% are euthanized due to behavioral, psycological, physical or other reasons (such as being lost and recovered by dog patrol, or a dog bite which results in mandatory euthansia)

A single dog can have 8 puppies.

Multiply that number by the number of pets who give birth every year to puppies and you have a recipe for overpopulation, euthanasia, and neglect.

Add in that having over 3 dogs can lead to "pack issues" and children/adults being harmed.

Additionally few people know that in Onondaga, Oneida and Oswego county it is ILEGAL to own more than 3 dogs per property including residential areas.

So the word for now is clear: Have your pets fixed, be a responsible pet owner, report abuse and animal hording (It IS illegal and is harmful to people and animals) and stay aware of laws and regulations in your neighborhood.

So friends we have been a long time updating the web blog. You see Amber has been out of town doing the music and leafleting thing and I have been knee deep in veterinary epidemiology.

Good Times.

As a means for Kind Outreach to pay for our ever burgeoning abuse investigation costs we have started a pet sitting program.

Joy is heading the sitting program and all proceeds go to KOHEP activities.

The cost break down is as follows:

Single Cat: Three weekly checks on cat with food, water change, plant watering, mail, litter box change, clean up of any "messes" and 30 minutes of play time with the cat. $5/day

2-3 cats: Three weekly checks on cat with food, water change, plant watering, mail, litter box change, clean up of any "messes" and 60 minutes of play time with the cats. $10/day

3 or more cats: Three weekly checks on cat with food, water change, plant watering, mail, litter box change, clean up of any "messes" and 90 minutes of play time with the cats. $15/day

Single Dog: Twice daily in home visit, with 15 minute walk, 15 minutes of indoor soocialization, food, water change, plant watering, mail, and dog feces/urine clean up. $20/day

2 dogs: Twice daily in home visit, with 15 minute walk, 15 minutes of indoor soocialization, food, water change, plant watering, mail, and dog feces/urine clean up.

In home dog sitting:

Includes 2-15 minutes walks, unlimited socialization, basic obediance refresher, food, water change, plant watering, mail, clean up of any dog feces/urine. Sleep-over supervision. Animal will not be left alone for loner than 7 hours for work and or rescue calls.

1 dog: $40/day

2 dogs: $50/day

Combination Households:

Hey Kids!

Kind Outreach has stumbled upon two individual craftspersons whom make plugs for larger gauged ears.

Both can make regular and custom plugs and can make different legnths, styles and unique creations.

The first guy is Bill from Frozen Fire at Etsy.com

Bill has a cat named Ozzie whom is a rescue. He makes custom glass plugs in his home studio and his rates and craftsmanship are beyond reasonable.

I am wearing a pair of his plugs right now!

The second artist that we ran into is Paul from Pauls Plugs

His doggie is a pup with beautiful eyes.

I have recently ordered a pair of Chakte-Kok plugs.

The custom plugs are amazing even to LOOK at, anyone would be privledged to have a pair!

Summer Veggie Recipe

Keen Moroccan Succotash

1 cup Red/split Lentils/ canned or soaked and drained Garbanzo beans
1/2 onion diced
2 peeled and diced zucchini
8 ounces crushed tomatoes (or fresh tomatoes..but I prefer seeding them first)
2 tablespoons sugar/agave nectar
1 tablsepoon Garam Masala Seasoning
2 cloves chopped or pressed garlic

Method
Saute the Onions, Zucchini, and garlic until translucent over medium flame.

Boil legumes until soft.

Add tomato to sauteed veggies and then the Legumes, stir to incorporate.

add Garam Masala and Sugar

heat on low to medium heat for 20 minutes to blend flavors.

Serve with Pita Bread, Rice, or with potato chips (Nephews favorite)

A good recipe for leftovers and Summer veggies.

The cat claw- the painful truth about declawing

So I have had many people talk to me about wanting to declaw their cats. I try to remain as objective as possible, which knowing what I know if difficult.

Many cat owners don't seem to understand the declaw procedure. There is a technical diagram HERE

But let me put it in laymans terms.

Take your own hand, look at where your first knuckle is. Now imagine someone is going to cut off the tip of your finger at the first knuckle. This is a de-claw.

Because cats claws actually go into the BONE (as opposed to human fingernails) it is not a matter of taking off the nail.

During the recovery process each time yur cat jumps, walks, uses his litterpan, or cleans his paws he will have a deep aching pain in his bones. This pain can last up to 6 months.

Most veterinarians will not give pain medication to cats for longer than a few days at most.

I hear many people say that they had to declaw because they didn't want their cat clawing their nice furniture.

Let me tell you, I have two cats with claws and neither of them have destroyed any of my furniture. I use aversion and reprogramming techniques and once they are learned they are permanent.

1st make the object they are scratching unappealing. I put a faux suade throw behind a carpet and wood scratching post in an area I saw my kitten trying to scratch.

Cats naturally don't like the feeling of faux suade or faux fur and won't scratch there.

2nd I have a scratching post that have both a horizontal ad vertical scratching area. One is carpet and the other wood. I put the kitten on the scratching post and make scratching motions with her paws.

Then later when I saw her doing it I gave her a treat.

Now I see her all the time going over to the scratching post to "sharpen her claws"

3rd I started trimming her claws at an early age. As soon as I saw pointy I started handling and clipping her claws. Usually when I was clipping my toenails I would grab her and clip hers to. Then she gets a treat.

Now If I am in the bathroom clipping she will come in and paw at me wantint me to clip her claws.

There are also the option of training with a spray bottle, bitter apple, perfume (which cats don't like the smell so they tend not to scratch there) double sided tape and Soft Paws acrylic nail caps.

All of which are cheaper and a humane way to save your furniture, money and cats paws.

Hey there, its JUNE and Kind Outreach is FREAKIN busy yo!

First and Foremost we have literature now in conjunction with VERA House and Spay and Neuter Syracuse to hand out to families relocated by domestic violence, displaced by catastophy or just down on their luck.

Also we have Info packs to give to schools and educators on Humane education and are still plugging away at a curriculum.

We are in need of leashes, kennels, old carriers, portable water bowls, animal themed coloring books, reams of paper, cameras/film, Ace Bandages, Sterile gauze,Newspapers, and dog/cat food. We are getting into kitten season and also are looking for foster homes and "scholarships" for neuters and spays.

If you can help us, give us a ring.

We want to have a Recipe Book (Cook Book) gathered with vegan/vegetarian recipes to sell for a buck or two for KOHEP's first of hopefully annual fundraising effort to support Spay and Neuter Syracuse, Vera House, Humane Association, Wandering Paws , and others too numerous to mention. If they help kids in crisis and the animals they love, we will help with whatever we can.

We are also trying to formulate a Can drive and Change for Change drive. If you or your business would like to host a can/change drive give us a rin and we will drop off a container or pick up your cans.

We will be getting ready to do some outreach at Summer Events and will be recruiting for volunteers! There are ferals to trap at Toomey and there are going to be kittens soon that need to be trapped tested and dealt with.

I realize that many of you do not understand why you are recieving this e-mail. So I will get straight to the point. Each and every one of us knows someone who has a pet that is not spayed or neutered and has had puppies or kittens.

While adorable. The untold and unsung heroes of places like Wayward paws, Spay and Neuter Syracuse, SARO,Onondaga Human Association, CNY-ASPCA and other agencies get hundreds of unwanted and abandoned infant animals every single year.

This doesn't include animals displaced by family deaths, moving, a new baby or just abandoned because someone found them disposable or was uneducated about the tasks involved in having a companion animal.

48 kittens added to the 21 kittens for a total of 69 kittens left in boxes in the cold outside.

Take into consideration that these were the lucky ones who were not dropped off on a back road, a family farm, or just left in a wooded area to make it or die trying.

Take one second. Think about being left outside, alone, cold, with scared and hungry.

You are asking what you can do? 5 dollars to a rescue agency, a bag of food to a shelter, a certificate to neuter or spay an animal of someone who deserves a break, volunteer an hour to feed kittens, to walk puppies, adopt a shelter pet, get your own pet fixed.

Write an article about pet overpopulation and garner support to agencies in desperate need of your help.

You can make a difference if you try.

So a few friends have been finding abandoned kittens and asked for an online resource.

These are some of the BEST sites on the web for abandoned kittens.

First and foremost:

Get thee to a vetrinarian!

I cannot stress enough that just because a kitten is breathing, eating and pooping means they have a clean bill of health. Amond the risks: Feline Leukemia (contagious to other cats) worms (also contagious, and detrimental to kittens) and Fleas.

The importance of getting a kitten to a vet also is to make sure everything is functioning like it should. They will check, weight, stool sample, lungs, blood, and possibly begin booster innoculations.

Upon being given a clean bill of health or if you can't get to a veterinarean there are some guidelines:

1. Seperate from other cats until they are tested for feline leukemia.
2. Keep warm and hydrated. Often if cats suffer from dehydration they need IV fluids or if they have respiratory distress cannot smell fluids and need fluids administered via eyedropper. If you cannot get the kitten to drink TAKE IT TO THE VET.

Also: Each cat needs its own litter pan in seperate areas of the house. Even if the kitten in fine you will want to have it have a litterpan which is small enough for it to climb in and out of. Also this way the kitten won't ambush the older cats when they attempt to make potty.

3. When introducing them to another cat (Post vet visit) there is one trick I have learned to get cats to "deal" with each other. First seperate them and get the kitten set up in an area away from the other cats. Second take somethine the kitten has laid on and put it where the other cats can smell it. When the cats smell it pet them and give them a SPECIAL treat. Do this for at least 3 days.

4. Bring the kitten out and hold the kitten while another person pets the other cat. If you CAN sprinkle a little baby powder on the top of the cats rear where the tail meets the spin on top.

Do the same to th kitten.

Let them smell each others butts. Yes I said smell each others rears. Praise the cat for smelling and give them attention and another treat.

Let the kitten stay out longer and longer each time. Exspect lots of hissing, pissyness and genuine postering.

Make sure to NEVER have the kitten alone with the cat until you are CERTAIN they get along.

Try to encorperate play time with the older established cat each day away from the kitten. Also give the older cat a treat or privledge the younger cat is not allowed. This helps to keep the hierarchy happy. Happy Hierarchy is happy pets.

Remember cats are NOT pack animals. They tolerate and even show affection for other cats but in nature usually only females or males and females will seek out each others company.

So if two females are not best friends or two males, or a male and female! as long as they do not bully one or the other and seem to tolerate each other, that is FINE.

Dear Fellow Animal Advocates,

We are actively seeking out people to participate in Humane Education Opportunities around the State during Summer Break.

Currenlty both executive directors are Doing administrative and clinical work hours in order to attempt to get a few free spays and neuters for rescues.

Amber recently finished another successful and well attended conference on animal liberation at Syracuse University, as well as continuing to volunteer during clinic hours at the SANS clinic as well as tableing and working full time. She is a machine, KOHEP would be useless without her!

Joy is starting Vet Tech School in August and is currenlty doing clinical internships at Spay and Neuter Syracuse as well as other veterinaries specializing in exotics. She will continue free "Puppy Kindergarten" and "Obedience 101" as well as "Training for agressiv dogs" and "Training your family to be the pack" all classes are free (we ask for a donation to be made to KOHEP, SANS, or Onondaga Humane Asociation, etc) and one on one. Please e-mail or call to schedule.

So, being as we have been accepted and have recieved information and education tools from Duquesne Humane Education University we want to start offering seminars to train educators and civillians on humane education activities for children. If you are interested in becoming a trainer or being taught please let us know!

We have a growing library of handouts and cooperating agencies looking to utilize us throughout the summer and a partnership with the Westcott Community Center to partner the Summer Art Series with Humane Education. We will partner Art Projects, Community partners and Humane education activities in order to tap new resources and reach new audiences!

Reinvention of goals for 2007

My hopes are that within our new broadened scope we can begin to make more connections between abuse of himans and abuse of animals.

Below you will find examples of projects in which we wish proceed and as a collective group your talents came specifically to mind and I am extending an invitation to be adjunct board members, full members, or volunteers of KOHEP.

Goals:

1. To table in Syracuse April 28th:
What: Agriculture, Imperialism and War Conference
Where: 2nd floor of the Hall of Languages, SU
When: 10am-4pm

We hope to have flyers pertaining to factory farming, and connections between domestic and animal abuse as well as information about local rescue, rehabilitation, and resource agencies.

2. Feral cat capture. We have 4 feral cats behind a nursing facility adjacent to the Syracuse University and Environmental Science and Forestry Dorms. One has been placed and one subject euthanasia. Unfortunately as of now we have no feral colonies with openings and the cats upon study and examination appear to be completely feral. Unless we find a place to take them they will be captured and subject to euthanasia as applied in our good Samaritans protocol.

3. Writing and research a grant for seed money to aplly and aquie 501c3 and tax exempt status for KOHEP.

4. Creation of 2 hour curriculum on Humane Education to be offered free to Schools. There is already a 2 hour mandatory curriculum requirement in NYS that is grossly under done and often unfunded.

5. To create fund raising marketing ideas and implement fund raising strategies for agencies currently successfully working within the scope of alleviated animal and domestic abuse. To include Fund drives, supply requests, small sales, and other ideas as created and appropriate.

6. To provide direct services to understaffed and overworked agencies within the same scope to alleviate staff burdens and foster experience to volunteer with KOHEP. With the goal to eventually be able to give course credit for hours volunteered and coordinated through KOHEP refferals and references.

No fun under the Big Top

Circus Synapsis:

So Friday, Saturday and Sunday the Tigris Shrine Circus was in town. Of course Amber and I made a point to have one or both of us at every show.

During the first show walking over we were unsure of where we should be. So walking around we noticed a trail of hay and a large trailor. One of my volunteers proceeded to follow the trail so I followed him. Suddenly we both saw a chain moving and froze. my volunteer person who had come in went on the ground and looked into the garage and said "Its attatched to an elephant!" To which point he whipped out his camera phone and tried to take a picture.

THe other volunteer and I turned to walk out of the enclosure and suddenly a man walked out and spit at my volunteer on the ground. "Your not with those PETA assholes are you" he said.

"No" I said. "I work freelance investigations and submit them to the USDA and HSUS along with other livery agencies. But not PETA"

He shook his head and said "You guys shouldn't be back here"

I agreed and walked with the two volunteer men with me out of the barn and into our "Protestor Pen"

Although I agree it was not a good idea for us to be back there (hello giant piles of elephant poop) I can say that we were not tresspassing because
1. There were no signs saying no tresspassing,
2. There were no barricades seperating the elephant trailor from the midway where entire familes were parked in trailers.
3. When he asked us to leave we did so immediately without question or confrontation, we even APPOLOGIZED.

During our time at the show I chased down three loose dogs, helped a lady load her van, and made friends with the pitbull rescue team and several owners there for the dog show.

Ironically one woman wearing a real fur fox tail on the back of her jeans decided to call me a bad person because she "Hear from a sheriff that over head us talking about how a dog was hit by my car and I probably killed it, there for I am a bad bad bad person"

Hmm. She must have meant when a dog ran in front of my car in the city(not the fairgrounds), I slammed on the brakes (I was only going 20 MPH) and the dog ran INTO my car with its face. She neglected to tune in to the part of me tracking the dog to its house, consoling two kids who were left home alone. Didn't see Amber and I calling Child Protective services and the police when I found out the parents were not home, and us following up to make sure the dog recieved veterinary care even though it had been off leash and left to the control of a 7 year old and 5 year old. If you are going to be judgemental and noisy, be thorough.

To add insult to injury two of my protesters decided to wait and watch the elephants being unloaded and soon were being harrassed (while I was making nice nice with the trooper in the pen) So the trooper walks over and says "Two of your protesters are refusing to move away from the elephant container, the elephant keeper wants them arrested, will you come and talk to them?"

I went over and talked to the "protestors" But had to tell the sheriffs they had ligitamite concerns and pointed out that a family of 5 was standing there watching while the elephant guy was cursing and swearing. I guess we took too long talking because the elephant keeper suddenly LOST it.

While I am talking this out with nice troopers Monty and Richie, the elephant guy comes up and spits in my face and points his finger in my face and says "SHE IS A TRESSPASSING LIAR!, ARREST HER!"

Elephant guy wanted all of us, myself included arrested saying that we:
1. Lied about not being from PETA (but I didn't say I was with PETA because I'm not)
2. That we told him we WERE the USDA (I wouldn't do that because I am NOT a USDA employee and my paycheck can prove that my poverty)
3. We entered a restricted area with clearly posted signs and could have harmed the elephants. No signs. We saw ONE sign on the back of the barn that said "Horsemen and Horses only" Which we saw no horses and thought the barn was abandoned. However this might mean that the elephants and their handlers were tresspassing.

The Trooper Richie told the man that he had run BOTH our background checks and found that while my background found a speeding ticket that was 7 years old. The Elephant handler was too colourful to share and that he should settle down and let me handle my volunteers.

I began to rapidly wiegh my options in my head:
1. The guy gets MORE angry and tries to jump m volunteers/protesters and we have a brawl and the only people arrested are MY guys (fair right?)
2. This elephant Guy is OBVIOUSLY unstable and I don't want him to take this out on the already cooped up and stressed out elephants.
3. There is a family watching and we have the opportunity to make a safe and gentle exit while asking that they move the family for their safelty.

Now. As my family knows when you make me very very angry I become very very quiet. Rapidly an idea formulated and heres what I did:

First.
Turned to Monty, Began to cry. Huge giant tears, Trembling lip, wavering voice, pathetic. To which my tears were dried (by the trooper) and I received a cup of coffee and more time to think. Thanks Monty.

Second:
Turn to my volunteers and tell them, without a camera we are causing possible retalitory harm to the elephants, lets be the better people and ask that ALL of us are escorted from this area inclusing the family with young children. To which they agreed immediately and left with me.

Third
To the elephant guy: "One simple fact. For someone with nothing to hide thou doth protest too much. There are no signs anywhere quarantining this area and I am removing my staff because I don't trust you, you are the only convicted felon and liar here."

To which I asked Monty and Richie for a police escort from the scene to the pen.

Apparently one of the troopers took my card and tried to give it to the elephant guy and Monty snatched it from him and said "I will have you fired so fast your hat won't stay on your head!"

Then (yes more!) As we were leaving A Shriner complete with the tiny red hat stormed over and placed a finger and his face very near my face (lots of men hunched down red faced and screaming at me) and said "I used to be a trooper and you saying your these things and staying here is a felony and you can be procecuted, in fact you oughtta be arrested!" Not only was this ridiculously untrue, but completely uncalled for, bad shriner, BAD SHRINER!

I turned to the Shriner and said: "It is REALLY hard to take anything you say serisouly because your wearing a little red hat, with a tassel and taking third party information as fact. Which says to me that your trooper skills are rusty at best, stop touching me or I will ask for you to be arrested for physical assault." (Monty chose this time to stand behind me and look menacing.)

I can safetly say everytime I go to the circus it becomes more and more unappealing. I just hope that with all the crap that we had to put up with that at least a few people decided that the circus was a bad form of entertainment.

21 Kittens shoved in a box

It's hard to believe, but the 21 kittens that were left in a box ( in the snow, outside a Spay and Neuter Clinic) are now almost 6 weeks old and ready for potential homes. There are 19 remaining. We are planning to start testing, vaccinating and worming them next week.

If you know of anyone who you feel would like to adopt adoptees will be able to be Spayed and Neutered through SANS.

If you know of anyone who you feel would give one or more of these little ones a chance at a forever home, please let me know.

Kind Outreach is willing to transport kittens and provide Kitten 101 class for adopting families for no charge.

Why a Vegan?

We are vegan because we believe the fewer people who eat meat the less economical, humanitarian, and ecological problems we will have.

Animal welfare is entrusted to us all and they deserve a chance at a happy and healthy life instead of a short life of pain, darkness and despair.

Eat meat? Unless you had a part in raising, killing, and preparing the meat, we believe you probably shouldn't be allowed to eat as much as you do.

Its not about who is smarter, its about whether we are obligate carnivores or people willing and able to make a rational choice after being fully informed of all aspects of the "meat, fur, and pet" industry.

We are doing fundraising for our feral friend "Henry" He needs shots, neutering and a lot of touch therapy and behavioral modification so that he can live out his life happy in a loving home.

Henry was found shivering outside in a poor syracuse Housing project being fed by residents of a Veteran's Housing Unit.

We trapped him and brought him to our temporary foster home in Syracuse and cleaned him up and gave him a 5 by 3 foot enclosure with bedding, a litter pan, food water and privacy.

We have been talking to him, giving him small treats and getting him used to having us touch him. He is not aggressive but is extremely frightened of people and we are doing our best to try to show him not all people are the kind that left him outside in the cold to fend for himself.

We are not going to be able to do this sort of rescue work unless we have help from people like you!

So we have made custom screen printed t-shirts that say "VEGAN" in sega style font on t-shirts we found or bought from garage sales or rescue missions (reuse recycle yo!) They are selling for only a 5 dollar donation but we appreciate anything you can donate to get our buddy a new chance at life.

If you are a person whom wants one male cat, who is happiest doing his own thing and won't bother you for attention, whom is litterbox trained and wants to be a solo kitty of the house, Henry may be your new best buddy.

Some aren't comfortable selling it or giving it to charity, because they feel people should not wear animal fur. So what should people do with it?

Give it back to the animals. If you would like to see that old fur put to a good use, donate it to The Humane Society of the United States' Coats for Cubs program. The fur will aid and comfort wildlife.

Where Do the Furs Go?
All of the furs received by The HSUS are sent to wildlife rehabilitators, who use the furs to warm and comfort orphaned and injured wildlife. More than 200 rehabilitators from across the United States and Canada now participate in the program.

How Do the Furs Help Wildlife?

The furs are cut into an appropriate size for the animal, whether it be a bobcat, fox, raccoon, squirrel, or rabbit, and placed inside the animal's enclosure. The furry blanket becomes a surrogate mother to orphaned animals, reducing stress and giving comfort. One rehabilitator related a story about a restless orphaned river otter who chirped constantly. Once she was given a fur blanket, she settled right down. Turning the sleeve of a fur coat inside out, a rehabilitator can also create a warm nest for a burrowing animal such as an opossum. Some animals adopt a piece of fur as a playmate, jumping on it and wrestling with it.

How Do I Donate?

I found this site completely by accident. I looked through it and promptly sent it to my Chef father. He looked through it and was VERY impressed with the ingeniousness of these chefs!

However, I have to say the ingredients are on the more expensive side. Some of the recipes don't explain enough for the "newbie" cook. Such as the difference between a course and a rough chop.

But for the advance cook who would like to delve into newer and more sophisticated recipes to enlighten the palette this is INDEED the site for you.

For easier recipes for the newbie buy some books from Sarah Kramer, Or at least visit, Vegweb or The Post Punk Kitchen.

The joke was on the ewe at the Commeford and Sons Petting Zoo.

This last weekend the State Fair Grounds played host to the R.W. Commerford & Sons Traveling Petting Zoo. 180 plus animals including an elephant and a camel were used to entertain small children through rides, feeding, and picture taking.

What attendees were not aware of is the R.W. Commerford & Sons have a tarnished history with the USDA. From 1992-2003 the R.W. Commerford & Sons Traveling Petting Zoo has been cited several times for failure to meet minimal federal standards for the care of animals used in exhibition as established in the Animal Welfare Act (AWA).

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has cited R.W. Commerford & Sons numerous times for failure to provide adequate veterinary care, for failure to maintain enclosures and transport trailers, failure to have an attendant present during periods of public contact, improper feeding, and poor housekeeping.

Parents may have wanted to know that on at least two occasions’ elephants from R.W. Commerford & Sons have rampaged while giving rides to children and resulted in severe injuries.

Personally inspecting the animal pens with my fellow investigator Amber Coon we found not one of the animal pens had an attendant. Three or more pens were without water. At least two of the animals had visible ailments and injuries that appeared to be untreated.

Two pens had infant goats and sheep too young to be on display, and finally when asked if the elephant that had rampaged was still on display at the zoo I was informed gladly by the daughter of Mr. Commeford that indeed Minnie was still in rotation and was simply at home resting.

In other cities across the nation the R.W. Commerford & Sons Traveling Petting Zoo has been told they are no longer welcome. If a person were to see a neighbor’s pet being treated with such abuse they would report the person for abuse. Yet in these circumstances we take our children and crassly hand over our money with no thought as to the similarities.

It is time for Syracuse to become educated about animals used for entertainment and find alternative ways to entertain ourselves and our loved ones. Ways in which no animals have to suffer for our amusement.
